Ready, Steady Raspberry!
Yes, it’s that time again, your weekly dose of the Force of Fruit and Veggies. From bananas to beetroot: we feed you information. This week raspberries are in the spotlight.
These sweet and fresh beauties are small but have real superpowers. This superfruit contains over 45% of Vitamin C. The most important task of Vitamin C is giving you antioxidants. Antioxidants will remove aggressive substances that cause damage to your tissue and cells. It also ensures the formation of connective tissue, the absorption of iron and strengthens your resistance.
Vitamin B6 can also be found and this does a lot for your body: it regulates certain hormones and it’s necessary for your growth and blood formation. It also makes sure you have a proper functioning immune system and nervous system. A raspberry gives you extra energy every day. Sounds like superpowers to me!
Did you also know that the raspberry is a distant relative of a rose? Just like a blackberry a raspberry belongs to the so called ‘Rosaceae’. This is a big family of roses that has over 3000 to 4000 types. Raspberries come in several varieties like the ‘Glen Clova’, this variety is known for it’s good taste. It’s a relatively large raspberry with a light red color and a firm texture.
Raspberries grow wild in open fields in woodland areas. The growth of the fruit is affected by the seasonal climate and weather conditions, this has a direct impact on the ripening of the raspberry. Raspberries aren’t just Summer fruits; you’ll find them in the Autumn too. They both have a different cultivation methods. Within these two types of raspberries you have over 25 breeds with different features in maturation, color, taste and structure. These two types make it possible to harvest raspberries from the end of April until the end of December!
Do you ever wonder how this is possible? Well, summer raspberries grow in heated greenhouses or a plastic tunnel. Because of the heat the summer raspberries can grow. With autumnal -raspberries it’s a different story. During winter time big parts of the raspberry plant is pruned, this way raspberries can grow better in the greenhouses and they get a new chance to grow hence why they be harvested until December. To us that sounds really delicious.
